Northern England has been nurturing an exciting new wave of punk bands in recent months. With the likes of Drahla and Autobahn rising through the ranks, there seems to be one common denominator in MJ from Hookworms' Surburban Home Studios. ZoZo are the latest Leeds-based outfit to catch our attention and they are no exception to the rule. With the Hookworms front man behind the desk, 'A Bitter Gourd', the title track from the upcoming EP, teeters frantically on the edge of post-punk and psychedelia as intricate guitar lines flutter exotically on top of a groove-inducing bass line and rampant drums. The sprawling track starts off sounding a bit like a mash up between Talking Heads and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard before upping the ante and escalating into a noisy climax, which draws on the band's love of New York punk. A Bitter Gourd will be released on the 10th of November on Hatch Records. -HLMX
